Uvita Uncovered

While most travelers flock to the northern Pacific beaches or the Caribbean coast, those in the know head south to Uvita—a hidden gem on Costa Rica's Southern Pacific coast that offers everything the country is famous for, without the crowds. Nestled between the more developed Manuel Antonio to the north and the wild Osa Peninsula to the south, Uvita strikes the perfect balance between accessibility and authenticity. It’s also one of the favorite vacation spots for Costa Ricans.
Where Paradise Meets Purpose
Uvita is a small coastal town with a big heart, located in the Puntarenas province about four hours south of San José. But don't let the distance fool you—this journey is part of the magic. As you wind through the coastal highway, you'll pass through traditional Tico villages, cross rivers, and catch glimpses of pristine beaches that look untouched by time.
What makes Uvita special isn't just what it has, but what it doesn't have. There are no massive resorts, no all-inclusive compounds, and no spring break party scene. Instead, you'll find a laid-back community of locals, expats, surfers, yogis, and wellness seekers who've chosen this slice of paradise for its authenticity and natural beauty.
The vibe here in Uvita is genuine pura vida—people move slowly, greet each other warmly, and prioritize connection over commerce. It's the kind of place where you can watch the sunset from a quiet beach amongst the locals, then walk to a neighborhood restaurant for fresh-caught fish and organic local vegetables.
Make no mistake, despite the small town vibes Uvita also offers pharmacies, walk-in medical clinics, grocery stores, and all the necessities of modern life.
Marino Ballena: Where Whales Come to Dance
Uvita's crown jewel is Marino Ballena National Park, home to the iconic "whale’s tail" sandbar that appears at low tide—a natural formation that looks exactly like a humpback whale's tail from above. Whale watching tours depart regularly from Uvita, offering chances to see these magnificent creatures breaching, tail-slapping, and caring for their young.
The roughly 13,000 acre national park also protects pristine beaches perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and simply soaking in the natural beauty. The coral reefs here teem with tropical fish, sea turtles, dolphins, and rays.
Waterfalls and Rainforest Adventures
A short drive inland from Uvita's beaches brings you to some of Costa Rica's most stunning waterfalls. Nauyaca Falls is a local favorite—a two-tiered cascade that drops 200 feet into natural swimming pools surrounded by rainforest. You can hike to the falls or take a horseback riding tour, and many visitors spend hours swimming, cliff jumping, and simply marveling at the raw beauty.
Closer to town, The Uvita Waterfall offers another spectacular waterfall experience with a shorter hike. The surrounding rainforest is home to sloths, howler monkeys, white-faced capuchin monkeys, scarlet macaws, toucans, and countless other species.
Adventure for Every Soul
Whether you're seeking adrenaline or tranquility, Uvita delivers. The consistent surf breaks are perfect for beginners learning to ride their first wave or experienced surfers looking for uncrowded peaks. Stand-up paddleboarding through the mangroves at sunrise offers a peaceful way to start your day while spotting birds and marine life.
For those who crave more intensity, there's zip-lining through the jungle canopy, canyoning down waterfalls, and challenging rainforest hikes. Snorkeling and diving trips to Caño Island (about an hour offshore) rival any tropical destination for underwater beauty and biodiversity.
Adventure in Uvita doesn't have to mean extreme sports. Sometimes it's as simple as lounging at one of the local coffee shops, strolling the beaches, or taking in a sunset with a coconut in hand to sip on. The key is that everything happens at a human pace, giving you time to absorb the experience rather than just check it off a list.
The Growing Wellness Community
Uvita has evolved into a hub for wellness practitioners, yoga teachers, permaculture farmers, and holistic healers. The Wednesday and Saturday farmers market in nearby Uvita has become a social gathering point where you can buy organic produce, artisanal crafts, and homemade treats while connecting with the community. It’s one of our favorite field trips to bring our guests from Flō.
Why Uvita Over Everywhere Else?
If you're choosing a retreat destination in Costa Rica, here's why Uvita stands out:
Authenticity: Unlike heavily touristed areas, Uvita retains its genuine Costa Rican character. You'll interact with locals, experience real culture, and feel like you've discovered something special.
Natural Beauty: The combination of pristine beaches, accessible waterfalls, marine national park, and nearby rainforest offers unparalleled diversity in a compact area.
Peace and Quiet: The lack of commercial development means you can actually hear the ocean, the birds, and your own thoughts. This matters more than you might think when you're trying to do deep inner work.
Perfect for Transformation: The slower pace, natural beauty, and supportive wellness community create ideal conditions for personal growth. You're not fighting against the environment to find peace—everything here supports your journey.
